Upcycling and recycling,
It's the same, isn't it?

At SYNE, we focus on upcycling: an approach often confused with recycling.

And yet, these two approaches are quite different: they each have their own way of working and impact.

Two methods, two logics

Recycling transforms a material to create a new one.

Upcycling , on the other hand, reinvents the use of an existing object or material without altering its structure. It is therefore about adding value without destroying.

A simple example: a wooden pallet can be transformed into a planter without going through the industrial process. That's upcycling.

Conversely, recycling involves more intensive processing: plastic bottles, for example, are crushed, washed, melted… to become raw material again.

Less impact, more meaning

Upcycling is part of a logic of reuse and circular economy . It avoids the creation of a new product and therefore limits the consumption of energy, water and raw materials.

Recycling, while useful, remains more energy-intensive . It requires natural resources , often results in a loss of quality , and its effectiveness depends on impeccable sorting : a slight mixture of materials renders a product non-recyclable.

Limitations that should not be ignored

In France, recycling remains underdeveloped. Much so-called "recyclable" waste is exported . And even today, recycling complex or mixed materials remains a real industrial challenge.

And what about greenwashing in all of this?

Some brands are jumping on the green bandwagon without any real commitment. Be wary of empty promises. Instead, look at their production frequency, manufacturing locations, transparency … in short, their overall consistency.

Our position

Upcycling is our choice. Because it is more environmentally friendly and closer to our values.

But ultimately, what matters isn't just the raw material. It's the entire process. Where and how is the product manufactured? In what quantities? With what materials?

It is this overall vision that, in our opinion, makes all the difference.
